This
is the start ... it is really important at this stage to label, clean
and bag every part you remove. You think you have a good memory ...
forget it! a year down the line and it will be impossible to place
where that stray screw goes. There is a lot of work we are doing ourselves
but the level of restoration is going to require more than just an
enthusiastic enthusiast. We are using a restoration specialist for
the restoration of the shell. Believe me it's going to need that level
of attention ... don't get me wrong it's a fine example of a series
one, but we want this car when finished to be better than it was when
it was new.
The
doors are ok, they are starting to rust a little along the bottom
outer skin, but for this level of restoration and the availability
of original body panels from ford ... they will not be going back
on instead we will use new genuine replacement items at around £150.00
each.
Also the rubber is starting to perish luckly the rubbers are also
still available, a lot of this is due to the fact there was a series
two and they made plenty of them and a lot of the parts are generic
otherwise the parts would have been delisted years ago.
Before
we were stripping the car we had already accessed it and decided which
parts were no long acceptable, the interior was annoying as it was
90% there, just not perfect ... so we sourced a new one .. well nearly
two actually. One had unused rear seats absolutely mint and the other
had superb front seats. We are still not 100% happy as we want a totally
unmarked drivers seat ... unused if possible. We are considering a
re-trim of the two front seats if it using the original fabric and
is indistinguishable from new.
This
shot shows the seams on the floorpan showing signs of rust, this is
due to a flaw in the design allowing rust from the chassis leg to
spread to the floor pan. This is something which can be repaired but
the source of the problem will remain we are replacing the rear assembly
to kill this problem. Also a leaking sun roof wasn't helping the problem.
This is stuff thats hidden by sound proofing and panels inside the
boot.
